“Outlandering” (Words From Karol’s Mental Outlander Dictionary)

I have to say that I have done a lot of Outlandering over the years. My latest victims…I mean converts…are my Mom and Sister in law. They both looked at me bleary eyed this weekend and complained of eye strain because they couldn’t stop reading!

With the upcoming series permiere on Starz, there will be a lot of new readers coming into the land of Outlander…new people who will drool and swoon over the sexiness that IS Sam Heughan in the role of Jamie Fraser.  Three episodes in,  Diana’s book will be flying off the shelves.

New Twitter and Facebook fans will flock to find other readers, it will be a fun time for all of us Old School readers.

However, I have started early.  I am starting to make friends read the books now.  I am doing what I am calling Outlandering….

OUTLANDERING:  The fine art of making friends, family, and anyone else I can get my hands on, reading the novels and getting them involved by showing them Jamie Fraser.  Using words, websites and pictures.

Updated 6/30/14 : So what is your ‘Official Outlander name’ in Gàidhlig?

Àdhamh Ó Broin (@an_comhghallach) has most kindly been running an Outlander Fan name translation service via Twitter. 😉  Just find your name below and then use your imagination to hear Àdhamh saying the following in his best ‘How to Speak Outlander’ voice:

 “Say it with me,  __insert your Gàidhlig name here__ . You now have your own official OUTLANDER name! Latha math leibh!”

As I see new names come across Twitter, I’ll add them here. If there is no pronunciation guide, then it is pronounced the same as English. Also, keep in mind that because some of our more modern names don’t truly exist in Gàidhlig, what is given here is an approximation using the equivalent Gàidhlig spelling for the English sounds.

Abagail /AHbagle/ – Abigail  ‘gle’ like in waggle

Àdailin /AHdaleen/ – Adeline

Alàna / / – Alana

Àlasan / ALison – Alison

Outlander Mutual Admiration Society

So prior to @Writer_DG leaving for her close-up in Scotland, we knew there was much anticipation for a meeting between  Àdhamh and Diana.

Luckily, I can now report that the meeting has taken place and there is photographic proof!

Alas, Diana’s two lines are in Scots not Gaelic, so I don’t believe there was any direct coaching from Àdhamh, but she was able to observe him at work as evidenced in the following line of her post on Facebook entitled “My Brief Career as a TV Actor (Part 2).”

The director passes round, giving people instructions—and various specialists, such as the dialect coach and the Gaelic expert(this would be Adhamh O’Broin, whom you’ve seen in the “Speak Outlander” videos—a star in his own right. <g>) also zoom in to render aid and advice.

Good work Àdhamh! Dare we hope that there might be more “How to speak Outlander” soon?  Valentine’s Day is coming verra soon after all!

Meet Cuilean Tiberious Moore…

As a follow-up to my post earlier today, it’s now official. Meet Cuilean Tiberious Moore.

It looks like great minds think alike, Cuilean was suggested by @ginger_jasper‘s mom as well as by @An_Comhghallach. Tiberius just happens to be the middle name of Capt. James T. Kirk. It’s not often you can make two fandoms happy with one name!

How to Speak Outlander Lesson 3: “Mo Nighean Donn”

So for lesson 3 we get audience AND MacKenzie participation. I recognize lots of faces from the line at the January 11 Outlander Starz event. I don’t see me though. A couple of fans seem to have already been practicing but that won’t stop ALL of us from “saying it with you”, Sam! Glad to see Graham and Gary seem to approve, but that just might be the cookies talking.
